The Six Great Gelug Monasteries
Gelug is one of the most important sects of Tibet Buddhism. It is also called "Yellow Sect" for its monks wearing yellow hats. Due to the great influence on Tibet Buddhism and culture, Gelug's monasteries locate all over Tibet. Ganden Monastery locates on the Wangbori
Mountain(3800m) of Dazi County where is about 57km away from Lhasa city. It
plays a very special and important role in Gelug Buddhism because it was built
by the founder of Gelug - Tsongkhapa. So it is also famous as the Ancestor Monastery.
Ganden Monastery consists of more than 50 buildings which house about 400

Drepung Monastery
Drepung Monastery is located northern
outskirts of Lhasa city. It was built by the disciple of Tsongkhapa -
Jamyang Chojey in 1416. What makes Drepung very important to Tibet Buddhism is
that every Dalai Lama lived or studied here. Drepung used to be the most
prosperous monastery when it housed more than 10,000 monks, 141 manors and 540
pastures. It is also the place for "Display Giant Buddha" when Shoton

Sera Monastery
Sera Monstery was built by another famous
Disciple of Tsongkhampa - Sakyaye Ses. It locates
close to Drepung Monastery. Sera has kept more than 10,000 Kong Kim Buddha
stadues. Sera Monstery is famous for its Buddhism Debating. Every day, its
monks gather around to debate about Buddhism. Many movements and gestures are

Tashilumpo Monastery
Tashilumpor Monastery is located in western
Shigatse city. It is the largest monastery in Shigatse and Gyantse area. It was
built in 1447 by the youngest disciple of Tsongkhapa - Gendun who became
the first Dalai Lama. Since then, it has been the Seats of Panchen Lama. >>details
Kumbum Monastery
Kumbum Monastery, also known as "Taer Monastery"
is the birth place of the founder of Gelug - Tsongkhapa. It is located near to
Xining, Qinghai Province. It was originated from a pagoda, then became a
grand monastery of thousands buildings. You must not miss the “three bests” of
Taer Monastery – murals, barbola and butter sculptures. Taer Monastery is also
a very important institute to learn Buddhism, Astronomy and Medicine. There are
many Buddhist ceremonies organized here in each year.
Labrang Lamasery
Labrang Monastery is one of the six
great monasteries of the Geluk (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is
Tibetan Buddhism's most important monastery town outside the Tibetan Autonomous
Region. You have chance to see the monks studying and debating about Buddhism.
