4 Taboos When visiting Tibet Monasteries

Tibet Buddhism is the essence of Tibetan culture. And Buddhist monasteries the most common places to keep the Buddhism culture. There are many famous great monasteries located in different area of Tibet where is a big favor of tourists. But there are some taboo you should avoid when visit these monasteries, which will help you get rid of argument and trouble. >>more about Tibet Buddhism


  • Address monks correctly. Don’t call straightly “monk”, “heshan” and “chujiaren”. Different classes of monks, you address differently. Call common monks – “master”, the president of monastery – Abbot. 
  • Obey Buddhist manners. Don’t handshake, hug and touch monks’ head. When meeting or talking with a monk, you only need to be devout by putting hands together, or lower your head a little bit or other Buddhism gestures.
  • Talk appropriately. Don’t talk about killing, marriage, meat, etc.
  • Don’t talk loud, discuss or laugh at subjects in monasteries. Don’t move everywhere, because some rooms are not allowed to be visited. Don’t touch the relics, such as scriptures, sculptures, paintings, etc.
